TEHRAN – Interior Minister Ali Kordan on Sunday rejected a proposal to amend the election law for the 2009 presidential vote.
“As the interior minister I believe at the moment the ground is not prepared for changing the election law because the presidential vote is close and we have no time to change the law,” Kordan told reporters during a visit to the southeastern city of Zahedan. He said, “Since the presidential election is close, if we disrupt public opinion about the law for the next elections, everyone would be waiting to see what status they would have based on the new law.”
“I imagine we are not in dire need of changing the election law. The Guardian Council also agrees with my opinion,” Kordan opined.
Deputy Interior Minister for Legal Affairs Mohammad-Hossein Mussapur also said, “Changing the election law would create ambiguity.”
“Making numerous amendments to the law might create a situation in which executive planning would be impossible,” Mussapur told the Mehr News Agency.
Asked whether a minor amendment to the election law could be approved for the 2009 presidential vote, he said, “We believe amending the election law should not be limited because any small change in the law would add to its ambiguity.”
He said, “The latest amendments to the parliamentary election law not only did not clear up ambiguities, but also created some problems for the supervisors of the polls.
